A fun fact about me is that I grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Coming from a smaller and less urban city, I've learned how to appreciate and anticipate new and upcoming restaurants in town.
Located in Saskatoon’s vibrant Riversdale District, Hometown Diner offers a fresh twist on classic diner fare. With a modern aesthetic and a menu that champions local, seasonal ingredients, it’s become a go-to spot for all-day breakfast and lunch. Chef Cole Dobranski and his team craft every dish from scratch, ensuring quality in every bite.

The service at Hometown Diner was outstanding, making our dining experience memorable. Their dedication significantly enhances the diner's charm, creating a welcoming atmosphere. Every interaction, from friendly greetings to follow-up checks, was handled with care and professionalism. The exceptional service and cozy environment make Hometown Diner a standout choice for a delightful meal.
OINK-CREDIBLE BITES
Hometown Diner’s menu truly offers something for everyone, catering to those craving a hearty breakfast or a lighter lunch option. Among the dishes we sampled, the Fried Chicken & Pancake stood out as a classic diner favourite, featuring crispy, juicy chicken served atop fluffy pancakes; while it presented a delightful blend of sweet and savoury, it ultimately didn’t leave a lasting impression.
The Hometown Burger was another solid choice, boasting a 5oz chuck patty cooked medium well, accompanied by bacon, pickles, pickled onion, cheddar, and a secret sauce nestled in a seeded bun; while it delivered strong flavours, it didn’t offer anything particularly groundbreaking.
For those seeking a healthier alternative, the Mediterranean Bowl provided a lighter yet satisfying option that still managed to fill you up. However, the true standout of our meal was the Ukrainian Brekkie, which featured a delightful combination of perogies, sausage, ham, a sunny-side-up egg, caramelized onions, sauerkraut, and a sprinkle of chili flakes and lemon zest; this dish was rich and comforting, bursting with flavour, particularly appealing to fans of Ukrainian cuisine.
The dishes at Hometown Diner are made with care, using fresh, local ingredients, and it shows. While the food was delicious, it didn’t quite reach “wow” territory. The standout items were the fries—crispy, golden, and seasoned to perfection—and the Ukrainian Brekkie for its hearty, flavourful components. Portions are generous, making most plates sharable for a light meal.
PIGGY BANK SAVINGS
With prices ranging from $18.50 to $22 for most dishes, Hometown Diner leans slightly on the pricier side for diner-style food, which may initially raise eyebrows for those accustomed to the more budget-friendly options typically associated with classic diners. However, upon closer inspection, the pricing reflects a thoughtful consideration of both the quality of the ingredients used and the overall dining experience provided.
The menu features a variety of dishes that not only showcase traditional diner fare but also incorporate a modern twist, elevating the standard expectations of diner cuisine. The generous portions served at Hometown Diner are noteworthy; they are designed to satisfy even the heartiest of appetites, making them ideal for sharing among friends or family. This aspect of the dining experience can significantly enhance the value proposition, as splitting a few plates allows diners to sample a wider array of flavors and dishes without breaking the bank. Additionally, the emphasis on quality ingredients—sourced locally whenever possible—ensures that each meal is not only delicious but also fresh and vibrant. In this context, the slightly higher price point becomes justifiable, as patrons are not merely paying for a meal but are investing in a culinary experience that prioritizes taste, quality, and satisfaction.
