THE PIG PEN

Walking into Dookbaeki, you’re greeted by a warm and casual atmosphere. The interior is clean and modest, with simple wooden tables and decor that highlights the rustic nature of Korean dining. Traditional Korean clothing are donned on the walls to give it a cultural boost. The space feels inviting without trying too hard to impress. It's the kind of place where you can comfortably enjoy a meal with friends or family, but without the formality of a fine dining establishment. The restaurant is fairly popular, so while it can get a little busy during peak hours, the service remains friendly and efficient.

The highlight of Dookbaeki’s atmosphere is the sense of hominess. It’s a place where you come for good food and a relaxed environment—not for a flashy dining experience. The traditional stone bowls add a nice touch of authenticity, setting the tone for the delicious, soul-warming meals that follow.

OINK-CREDIBLE BITES

Now, let’s get to the main event—the food! Dookbaeki excels in delivering rich, flavorful broths that will have you coming back for more. We tried the 설렁탕 (Seolleongtang) and 얼큰 순대국밥 (Spicy Soondae gukbap), and both dishes were absolutely satisfying.

The Seolleongtang, a milky ox bone soup, was a comforting bowl of goodness. The broth was rich, velvety, and full of depth, yet surprisingly light in flavor. This allows for you to season the soup to your taste with salt and pepper on the table. A tip: I really love adding the kkakdugi juice into the soup as well! I add a couple of extra radish pieces in there for texture, and voila! It was clear that the soup had been simmering for hours, extracting every bit of flavor from the bones. Served with a side of kimchi, kkakdugi (radish kimchi), kongnamul (bean sprouts) and rice, the dish was perfect for a chilly day.

The Spicy Soondae Gukbap, a blood sausage soup with rice, was equally impressive. The broth was savory and aromatic, with just the right amount of seasoning. The soondae (Korean blood sausage) added an interesting texture, making each spoonful an enjoyable experience. Both dishes were hearty, with large portions that felt like the perfect winter comfort food.

The stone bowls played a key role in keeping the soups at the perfect temperature from the first bite to the last, ensuring that every spoonful was as satisfying as the one before it. I can already imagine returning to try other stews on the menu—their Gamjatang (Pork Bone Soup) or Soondubu Jjigae (Soft Tofu Stew) options seem promising for the next visit!

PIGGY BANK SAVINGS

One of the best things about Dookbaeki is that it offers great value for your money. The serving sizes are generous, and considering the quality of the broths and ingredients, the prices are more than reasonable. The dishes we ordered, the Seolleongtang and Spicy Soondae Gukbap, were each around the $15-$18 mark—an excellent deal for the portion size and the rich, homemade flavors.

We came around dinner time but I also saw that there were lunch deals or weekday deals that give you more food for even cheaper!

Given the consistently high quality of the food and the large servings, it’s easy to see why Dookbaeki is a popular spot for both locals and visitors alike. It’s affordable enough for regular visits without breaking the bank, and it’s certainly a spot I’d recommend for anyone looking to get a taste of traditional Korean comfort food.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Overall, Dookbaeki has definitely earned a spot on our list of go-to restaurants when we’re in the Coquitlam area. The hearty, flavorful broths, large portions, and welcoming atmosphere make it a perfect choice for a casual meal, whether you’re a long-time fan of Korean cuisine or a newcomer. The stone bowls are a unique touch that elevate the entire dining experience, and the affordability makes it easy to come back time and again.

For anyone looking to try some truly delicious Korean stews and soups, Dookbaeki is a must-visit. We’re already looking forward to returning to explore more of their menu!
